Choosing where we travel these days feels a bit more random, and we're ending up in places I never thought would be on my bucket list. In the summer of 2025, we knew we wanted to visit my sister and her family in Europe, but we had no clue where to go. We've already seen a lot of the continent, and the countries left didn't really excite us or felt too similar to places we've already been. Plus, flights from the US to the spots we were considering were pricier than we wanted—most direct flights were over $1,000. So, I tried something new for booking flights. I found the cheapest ticket to mainland Europe, which turned out to be to Copenhagen with Icelandic budget airline Play for about $525. I booked a round trip to Copenhagen and thought, hey, we can get anywhere in Europe for under $50 each from there, and we can check out Copenhagen for a couple of days too.

After that, we had to decide where to meet up with my sister. My brother-in-law was super keen on going to the Baltics. It wasn't exactly on my must-see list, but I stayed open-minded and started planning a two-week trip. We ended up crafting an itinerary that took us around the Baltic Sea, hitting five countries. It was the perfect blend of chill and adventure, making for a memorable family vacation with unique experiences at each spot. Below is a map highlighting key transportation, accommodation and activities we participated in along the way.

Join us as we embark on an unforgettable journey through the vibrant cities of the Baltic region, starting in Copenhagen, Denmark. From exploring the enchanting Tivoli Gardens to biking through the historic streets, our adventure is filled with cultural experiences and cherished moments with my sister and her family. Our journey takes us to the heart of Latvia, where we immerse ourselves in the beauty of Riga and Sigulda. The city’s stunning architecture, including the iconic House of Blackheads and the bustling Central Market, captivates us. Sigulda's small town atmosphere combined with thrilling activities made memories for the whole family. After Latvia, we traverse through Tallinn, Helsinki, Stockholm, and Malmö, indulging in local cuisine and thrilling activities along the way. Each city offers its unique charm, but Latvia truly stands out as the highlight of our trip. Details of our adventure are below.

Detailed Itinerary by Country

Denmark (Copenhagen)

  • Day 2:

    • Transportation: Our trip to Copenhagen began with a flight from Keflavík International Airport (KEF) to Copenhagen Airport (CPH), with an expected arrival time around noon. The journey lasted about three hours, allowing us to enjoy stunning aerial views of the North Atlantic and the Scandinavian landscape as we approached Denmark. Upon landing, we had various options for transportation to the city center, including the efficient train service that connected the airport to central Copenhagen in approximately 15-20 minutes, but we ended up on a metro which got us there in like 30 minutes but it ran more frequently.

    • Accommodations: For our comfortable and budget-friendly stay, we selected the Urban House Hostel as the ideal lodging option. This modern hostel offered a variety of room types, including shared dormitories and private rooms, catering to our different preferences and budgets. We got a private room. We enjoyed a vibrant atmosphere, complete with communal spaces that encouraged social interaction among travelers. Additionally, the hostel featured amenities such as a pool table, pinball machine, a bar and café, and a kitchen for those of us who wished to prepare our own meals, all contributing to a delightful and convenient stay in the heart of the city.

    • Activity: Our first day in Copenhagen was designated as an adjustment day, allowing us to acclimate to the new environment and time zone. In the late afternoon, we planned to visit the iconic Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, known for its enchanting atmosphere and beautifully landscaped gardens. We strolled through the park's pathways, taking in the stunning floral displays and historical architecture. As evening approached, the gardens came alive with twinkling lights, providing us with a magical experience. We enjoyed various attractions, from thrilling rides to cultural performances, and sampled Danish cuisine at the numerous food stalls and restaurants within the park. This leisurely introduction to Copenhagen not only offered us a chance to relax and unwind but also set the stage for an exciting adventure in the days to come.

  • Day 3:

    • 8:00 AM: We began our day with a leisurely stroll through the enchanting old town, an area steeped in history and charm. As the sun rose, the streets were still quiet, allowing me to fully appreciate the stunning architecture and the serene atmosphere. We took our time to admire key historical buildings such as the iconic Round Tower, which offered a unique spiral ramp leading to an observation deck with breathtaking views of the city. I made sure to capture photographs of the colorful facades and cobblestone streets, which were often less crowded in the early morning light.

    • 10:30 AM: We embarked on a captivating bike tour with Tropical Bikes, where we spent three hours cycling through the vibrant streets and hidden gems of Copenhagen. This guided tour took me off the beaten path, allowing me to discover lesser-known spots alongside popular attractions. I felt the wind in my hair as I pedaled through picturesque neighborhoods, past lush parks, and along the scenic waterfront. Our knowledgeable guide shared fascinating stories and insights about the city's history, culture, and local life, making this an enriching experience.

    • 2:00 PM: After our adventurous morning, we made our way to the Tower Church, where we had a reservation to enjoy a panoramic view of Copenhagen from its observation platform (actually, it was for the next day but the guard was kind enough to let us in anyways!). We ascended the winding staircase to reach the top, where we were rewarded with stunning vistas of the cityscape, including the shimmering canals, historic buildings, and the iconic spire of the Church of Our Saviour. We took a moment to soak in the breathtaking scenery and capture the essence of Copenhagen from above, making this a highlight of my trip.

    • 3:00 PM: Following our visit to the Tower Church, we headed to the King's Garden for a relaxing afternoon picnic. This beautiful park, located adjacent to Rosenborg Castle, featured meticulously manicured lawns, vibrant flower beds, and serene pathways. I found a cozy spot to lay out our sweatshirts, in lieu of a blanket, and enjoyed a selection of local delicacies, including some Danish pastries, cheese, and fresh fruit. As we unwound in this tranquil setting, we took the time to appreciate the artistry of the surrounding gardens.

    • Transportation: We concluded the day with a flight at 9 PM from Copenhagen to Riga, which took approximately one hour.

While a smaller group engaged in this educational experience, the rest of the family enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon at a nearby playground, where the children laughed and played to their hearts' content. A few of us set off to the "Corner House" which was a KGB headquarters, interrogation center and prison. Another sobering educational experience. Later, we found a quaint outdoor café where the adults could relax and enjoy a drink while the kids indulged in some screentime back at our Airbnb, providing a perfect balance of relaxation and play.

    • Evening: As the sun began to set, we gathered for a family-style Latvian meal at Ala Pagrabs, a restaurant known for its traditional dishes and warm atmosphere in a cellar. The table was laden with an array of delicious foods, allowing us to share and savor the flavors of Latvia together. After dinner, we emerged from the cellar to find the sun had not actually set and we wandered through the old town once more, where the streets were alive with the sounds of talented musicians performing in the evening air. The ambiance was magical, with the soft glow of streetlights illuminating our path as we strolled, listened to the music, and soaked in the vibrant culture surrounding us.

This interactive attraction challenged us to navigate through a maze filled with surprises and obstacles. Following this, we reveled in an exciting game of Laser Tag. This activity included a unique twist, as it took place around an old Soviet headquarters building, adding an element of historical intrigue to the fun. The excitement continued with Bunker Quest, where we explored an old WWII bunker and engaged in a combination laser tag and escape room activity. This intense experience was both educational and exhilarating, providing insights into history while delivering an adrenaline rush.

    • As we enjoyed these thrilling activities, we discovered a nearby local park that featured a bike park and a low ropes course, perfect for winding down after the day’s adventures. We set up for a picnic in this picturesque setting, enjoying the fresh air and natural beauty while sharing stories and laughter over our carefully selected picnic food.

  • Day 6:

    • Morning: We started the day with a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee and local, fresh eggs, bread and fruit. The rich aroma filled the air and set a delightful tone for the day ahead. After savoring our morning beverage, we headed to the nearby bike park which was a kid favorite and free!

    • 12:00 PM: At noon, we prepared for an exhilarating experience at the Turbo Zip Line located at Sigulda Adventures. This thrilling activity promised an adrenaline rush as we soared through the treetops, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

    • Afternoon: As the afternoon unfolded, we returned to the bike park for more cycling fun. If the weather took a turn and rain began to fall, we didn’t let it dampen our spirits! Instead, we gathered for some cozy indoor entertainment. Board games provided an excellent way to bond, offering a mix of strategy, laughter, and friendly competition.

We were excited to settle in and prepare for the evening’s activities.

    • Evening: As the sun began to set, we made our way to Olde Hansa for a medieval-themed dinner. The restaurant, renowned for its authentic medieval ambiance, transported us back in time with its rustic decor and candlelit tables. While the food was just alright, it was the enchanting environment that truly made the experience memorable. We enjoyed the lively atmosphere, complete with traditional music and costumed staff, which added to the overall charm of the evening.

  • Day 8:

    • 2:00 PM: Our afternoon adventure began with an Airbnb Experience that promised to be both exhilarating and culturally enriching: an eBike ride around the scenic landscapes of Helsinki. We set off on our electric bikes, which allowed us to effortlessly navigate the city’s charming streets and lush parks. Although the kids had regular bikes. Our first destination was the enchanting Seurasaari Island, a serene haven known for its open-air museum showcasing traditional Finnish architecture. Here, we indulged in a delightful traditional Finnish meal, sampling local delicacies that highlighted the rich culinary heritage of the region.

    • After our meal, we continued our biking journey towards the iconic Olympic pool, where we took a refreshing swim. This facility, originally built for the 1952 Summer Olympics, is a testament to Finland’s commitment to sports and recreation. Following our invigorating swim, we embraced the quintessential Finnish experience by unwinding in a traditional sauna, which is an integral part of Finnish culture and lifestyle. The way the Finnish embrace nudity was definitely a cultural experience for all of us.

  • Day 10:

    • All Day: We utilized a convenient day ticket purchased through the HSL App, which allowed for seamless travel across Helsinki’s public transportation system. This ticket granted us the freedom to hop on and off trams, buses, and metro lines, making it easy to delve into the city's various neighborhoods without the hassle of individual fares.

    • Morning: We started our day with a delightful breakfast at a charming nearby café, where the aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air. We indulged in an array of delectable pastries, including fluffy cinnamon rolls glazed with just the right amount of sweetness, paired perfectly with rich, aromatic coffee that provided a much-needed boost for our day ahead. After satisfying our appetites, we began to wander around the city, soaking in the sights and sounds of Helsinki, from the stunning architecture to the bustling streets filled with locals and tourists alike.

    • Activities: Our first stop was the renowned Helsinki Central Library, a modern architectural marvel that invites visitors to explore its vast collection of books and resources. Sweden (Stockholm and Malmo)

  • Day 11:

    • Morning: Upon arriving in the bustling port of Stockholm, the first step was to hop on a train that whisked us away to Central Station, a hub of activity and a great starting point for our day. After storing our luggage at the station, we set off on foot to explore the charming streets of Gamla Stan, also known as Old Town. This historic area is characterized by its narrow cobblestone alleys, vibrant buildings, and rich history. As we wandered, we stumbled upon the majestic Royal Palace, where we were fortunate enough to witness the changing of the guard ceremony. (Of which the children were very vocal about their lack of interest.). Later, we indulged in a culinary delight at a highly-rated cafe just a couple of blocks from the main tourist sites, where we savored traditional Swedish meatballs served with lingonberry sauce and creamy gravy, a truly authentic taste of local cuisine.

    • Afternoon: Following our delightful lunch, we embarked on a unique Golf Cart tour of Skeppsbron, which lasted about 90 minutes and was booked through TripAdvisor. This eco-friendly mode of transport allowed us to cover a lot of ground while enjoying the sights with ease. Our guide shared fascinating stories and historical insights about many of Stockholm's iconic landmarks, helping us decide which attractions we wanted to explore further the next day. After the tour, we let the kids take the reins in choosing our next adventure, which led us to the illustrious Vasa Museum. Here, we marveled at the grandeur of the 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage and was remarkably preserved. The children were particularly enthralled by the tales of the ship's history and the intricate details of its restoration. Although I had initially thought they would opt for a visit to the amusement park, the allure of the Vasa Museum proved to be irresistible and won their hearts.

    • Evening: Our unique lodging experience awaited us at Långholmen, a former prison turned hotel located on Långholmen Island. This distinctive establishment offers guests a chance to stay in repurposed prison cells, complete with modern amenities while still retaining the building's historical character. The corridors echo with stories of the past, and the atmosphere is a fascinating blend of history and hospitality. Guests can enjoy the quirky charm of the rooms, which have been thoughtfully designed to provide comfort without losing the essence of their original purpose. The hotel also features a lovely restaurant, bar, and cozy lounge areas, allowing visitors to unwind in a truly unique setting. Additionally, the picturesque surroundings of Långholmen Island offer beautiful views of the water and greenery, making it a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle.

    • Evening:  For dinner, we decided to keep it casual and enjoyable by picking up a variety of delicious goodies from nearby stores, allowing us to sample local snacks and treats. We chose to dine in one of the hotel's charming outdoor garden spaces, where we could relax amidst the greenery and enjoy the fresh air. The atmosphere was peaceful, and as the sun began to set, we reflected on our day filled with memorable experiences and looked forward to the adventures that awaited us in the days to come.

  • Day 12:

    • All Day: The day was filled with excitement as we set out to visit a variety of attractions that had been enthusiastically chosen by the hubby and kids. Our first stop was the renowned Technology Museum, a place where innovation and creativity come to life. The children were particularly fascinated by the interactive exhibits that allowed them to engage with technology in a hands-on manner. They eagerly explored everything from robotics to virtual reality experiences, each exhibit igniting their curiosity. After our enriching experience at the museum, we made our way to Sky View, an iconic attraction that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. As we ascended in the glass-enclosed gondola, the kids were filled with a sense of wonder and excitement. Once we reached the top, they gazed in awe at the sprawling cityscape below, pointing out landmarks and sharing their thoughts on what they could see. Following our adventures in the city, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy. We headed to IKEA, a store known for its stylish yet affordable home furnishings. The kids were thrilled to navigate through the showroom, imagining how each item could transform our home. They eagerly picked out small decorative items and fun gadgets, enjoying the process of selecting things that reflected their personal tastes but unable to actually buy much to take home with us. Next, we visited the Fjällräven store, where the prices were notably higher than what we had encountered at IKEA. Despite the steep costs, the I was drawn to the stylish backpacks, with the swedish flags and designed to withstand the rigors of adventure. I left emptyhanded and a plan to visit a store in the US upon return. To wrap up an already eventful day, the hubby and I explored the beautiful island that Langholmen is situated on. The island is a hidden gem, featuring a network of scenic trails that wind through lush greenery and along the water's edge. T We took time to pause and appreciate the natural beauty surrounding us, making memories as we laughed and shared stories during our leisurely stroll. Overall, the day was a delightful mix of education, adventure, and family bonding, leaving us with a wealth of experiences to cherish and reflect upon.

  • Day 14:

    • Morning: We started our day with a relaxed morning routine, allowing everyone to wake up at their own pace and enjoy a leisurely breakfast. After we finished, we made our way to the bustling Stockholm Central Station, which is not only a hub for transportation but also a vibrant space filled with shops and eateries. The girls had set off an hour earlier than the boys, eager to explore the local shops for souvenirs before we departed from the beautiful city of Stockholm. We took advantage of the extra time to browse through various stores, picking out unique items that captured the essence of their experiences in Sweden. The little one, chose a colorful assortment of candies that she could enjoy later on the journey, and a charming 'I heart Sweden' moose keychain that would serve as a sweet reminder of our trip. Meanwhile, I found a very Scandinavian sweater, beautifully crafted and perfect for the cooler weather, which I couldn't resist purchasing as a keepsake of our time in this lovely country.

    • Transportation: Our journey continued with a scenic train ride from Stockholm to Malmo, which took approximately four hours. The train itself was comfortable and well-equipped, providing us with a smooth ride through the picturesque Swedish countryside. As we settled into our seats, I took the opportunity to immerse myself in my book that I had been reading throughout the trip, which was set in Sweden—the renowned Millennium series, famously known for its first installment, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." The gripping narrative and vivid descriptions of the Swedish landscape added an extra layer of enjoyment to our travel experience, making the time fly by as I turned page after page.

    • Accommodations: Upon our arrival in Malmo, we checked into the Elite hotel, which was a splendid choice for our stay. We needed to book two spacious yet separate rooms, one for the kids and the other for the adults. Four person rooms are a rarity in Europe where family-sized rooms are often limited.

    • Afternoon: As the afternoon unfolded, it became clear that the kids were feeling a bit vacationed out, needing a break from the constant excitement. We decided to leave them at the hotel and take a leisurely stroll around Malmo, allowing them to recharge while we soaked in the local atmosphere. As we wandered through the charming streets, we stumbled upon several Swedish brand stores, showcasing everything from fashion to home goods. We also found a cozy cafe where we could relax and enjoy some refreshments. To our delight, we discovered that a festival was being set up in the town square, which meant that the streets were closed off to cars, creating a peaceful and pedestrian-friendly environment. This added to the charm of our afternoon, as we could leisurely explore the area without the usual hustle and bustle of traffic, making our walk even more enjoyable.

Return to USA

  • Day 15:

    • Transportation: Our Baltic Adventure has come to a close and our journey home began with a pleasant and efficient 20-minute train ride from the picturesque city of Malmo, Sweden, to the bustling Copenhagen airport. The train, known for its punctuality and comfort, glided smoothly through the scenic landscape, allowing us to take in the charming views of a large bridge across the bay. After checking in for our flight, we took a moment to enjoy a quick lunch at the airport lounge which accepts the Priority pass that we get with our credit card (soon a perk to be ended). Upon arrival to Iceland, we were greeted by the stunning vistas of the erupting volcanic mountains and expansive lava fields. However, the highlight of our travel experience came unexpectedly on our flight from Iceland to Baltimore. As we settled into our seats, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that some friends of ours were coincidentally on the same flight. It was a delightful coincidence that added an unexpected layer of joy to our journey. We were able to sit together, catching up on each other's adventures and sharing stories about our respective travels.

    • As we approached Baltimore, we reflected on the incredible journey we had just experienced, filled with new memories and the warmth of friendship that made it all the more special.
